I have an 88 Accord with a manual transmission. Lately I have been thorugh many transmissions as 5th gear has failed a couple times. Some of the failures may have had to do with a broken motor mount so that was a bummer but is now fixed.

I am wondering if 5th gear can be fixed independently of the rest of the tranny or if I have to replace the whole thing. This is getting expensive. Does anyone know about this ?

5th gear is on the top of the case. It's actually the easiest to fix. Replace synchro rings, bushings, gear and fork.
