can iac cause a no start?
Hi guys, working on my daughters 98 civic 1.6 automatic. I know this isnt a civic forum but HAF has been so good with my accord I'd rather ask you guys. Car is cranking but not starting. Has spark and fuel. Will not start with starting fluid. Iac was swapped with a used one 3 weeks ago by her friend when this same thing happened. Car then ran but would idle either high or low, not fluctuating. No tach on car so hard to estimate. Even when it ran it was difficult to start, needing some pressing of gas pedal to get it to fire. Then it would either idle high making it hard to put in gear or low enough to want to stall. Once I got it started and in gear it ran strong and shifted smoothly. Got a little more difficult to start each time we tried. I pulled the iac and cleaned it with no apparent change. Checked spark by placing plug and wire on top of motor, plug near valve cover bolt head and cranking. Checked fuel by opening banjo bolt on fuel rail and getting fuel spray. I feel like the engine cant breathe, any ideas? Thanking you in advance.

Don't think so.
The IACV has a pretty limited range of control, so even if it was stuck completely closed you could easily start the engine by pressing the gas pedal a bit.
I've got a friend with a 2k Civic, and I think the idle settings are not like the Accord. So don't just follow the "base-idle" stuff that I wrote over in DIY. I'll try to look up something about that.
Better yet, look for a repair manual on some of the links in the "online manuals" thread. I vaguely remember that you don't unplug the IACV, but it would be better to actually read it in the shop manual.
Feels like it "can't breathe", so I assume you opened up the air cleaner & intake ducts to look for mice or anything silly like that?

Just went to Autozone and had them pulled,
1. P0113 - IAT sensor circuit
2. P0170 - Fuel trim bank one
3. P0172 - Fuel system too rich bank one
Car has an ebay short intake, and hairline crack in top of stock exhaust manifold. Think that may account for 1.and 2.

First check for dirty/loose/corroded wiring to the IAT sensor. It might be a good sensor with a cut wire.
Crack in the exhaust manifold? Where is the oxygen sensor located? That sensor actually measures oxygen DIFFERENCE inside vs. outside. So exhaust blowing onto the outside of that sensor will throw off the measurement and that can cause P0170 & P0172.

Thank you Jim, havent replaced yet so will do a thorough inspection of wiring. Crack is right on top where all four pipes come together. Looking straight down from front of car crack runs in a straight line either on original weld or a repair weld. This is a d16y7 so o2 sensor is just forward and slightly down from where the crack is. I know I need to replace this part. Have no experience looking at these on a civic. There is no heat shield like on others. Have you read anything that would cause a no start though? Thanks.
