Here is a konundrum for you guys.. Ceck Engine Light coming on randomly in the middle of driving. Not able to get a code because everytime I turn the car off and back on it might not come on again. the general running of the car is still ok (no rough running, knocks, grinds etc..) so Im confused. this has been going on a week.

Backup fuse OK? If not, it would clear every time you turn off the key.

Drive so the CEL comes on. Leave the engine idling when you short the SCS connector. Maybe you can get the code that way?

If popping a cel the code should be stored in the ecu until cleared like Jim said.
I would try and reset your ecu. Let it idle without touching the gas and wait until your cooling fans kick on. Then drive the car like you norm. would when you see your cel pop. and see if it happens again.

just checked the fuses. all are good, underhood and under dash. I tried the idling until the fans came on then driving and it seems that the only time the CEL does pop on is driving. and its not all the time.. O2 sensor maybe?

Don't guess, there's too many other possibilities. I think your time is better spent figuring out why it doesn't store a code. Or read the code after it comes on like I said.
