Drove 15 miles at 55mph to get inspected
Temp never got above 170
No cel lights ever
Went to back out of inspection, wouldn't start
Had to bang on starter
Drove home 15 miles at 55.
No cel, temp never went above 170

So we know that there is no blockage in the system. Did you have to stop at some point. Did you notice the engine temp raise when you had to stop? If not then the only thing it can be is the thermostat.

When you got home was the cooling fan cutting on. It seems to me everything else is working as it should.

Negative. Temp never seemed to get hot enough for the switch to activate the cooling fans

Of course there was no thermo in. I would put it back in and focus on the fan

The a.c. button turns on both fans. The new fan temp switch in the thermostat housing jumping it turns on both fans.. both thermostats opened fully when placed in hot water..

I have heard of drilling a bigger air hole in the top of thermostats .. I wonder if I just had an air pocket in there

Ok I thought the fans weren't turning on. It could very well have been an air pocket. Do you have everything back in as it should
