Default Cruise control intermittant 2003 4cyl

Have a 2003 Accord LX Sedan with the 4 cyl engine. Sometimes the cruise works perfectly but other times it will not work. When I press the main button, the light comes on, but when I press the set button the green cruise light will light up for a second and then go off. Press it again and it does the same thing. Sometimes after pressing it 15 or 20 times it will stay on. Any ideas? Thanks.

Check for an intermittent problem with your brake lights? If the switch on the brake pedal is not adjusted properly it might cancel the cruise (and light up the brake lights) when you're not really on the brakes.

If you have a manual transmission, same thing for the switch on the clutch pedal.

Jim,

Is there a description somewhere that shows the proper adjustment for the brake switch?

I would just check to see that when the pedal is up, it pushes in the plunger of the switch. Make sure that the brake lights are coming on only when the pedal actually moves a couple mm.

Ok I checked the pedal, it is pushing in the plunger on the switch when it's up and brake lights only come on when I push pedal in just a little. Cruise control did work fine tonight coming home from work.

It can "look" closed but testing the pins on the switch would be the best.

Just an update on cruise control. I've noticed that if I try to put cruise on and it does not work, I just put my foot under the brake pedal and pull up just a bit it and then hit the cruise button it works every time.

Brake light switch is either out of adjustment or sticking. You can loosen the lock nut and give it a 1/2 turn (or so) in towards the pedal and then tighten the lock nut.

Think of the brake switch as having three positions.

Brake lights on - brake lights off - cruise circuit closed

The fact that you can "lift up" on the brake pedal and then the cruise works tells me that something is not allowing the brake switch go from "brake lights off" to "cruise circuit closed".

EDIT: slow typing......guess that is what I get for typing and watching tv ......I see the Dr posted as I was typing.
