Default D4 light flashes every time car drops down gear...HELP!!!!

Hi all,

I just purchased a 1997 Honda Accord I believe the engine has been changed at some point to the H22A 2.2 DOHC vtec, unfortunately, it's the Automatic which I do plan to swap out sometime in the future.
Anyways car has all of a sudden started to go into limp mode as soon it drops a gear. Car drives fine if driven manually changes through all gears fine but soon as I drop a gear even at low speeds the car goes into limp mode and when I shift out of D4 I see it flashing.
In limp mode drives ok taking it easy but does not kick down in gears and slowly gathers speed
Also in limp mode, I have to manually change gears to pick up speed.
D4 light starts flashing but no check engine light. if I turn the car off and start again D4 stops and as soon as I drop a gear when braking etc starts flashing again.

I have checked the gearbox oil and it's clean, gearbox solenoids are also clean. checked the gearbox ECU and there are no signs of any burning or anything looks very clean.

I can not find the OBD port anywhere in the car checked both passenger and driver side footwells and behind the ashtray, not sure if previous owners have changed it or anything so can't get any codes just now.

Also, i get a ticking sound coming from the driver's side engine bay when accelerating is that normal?

Any suggestions and help much appreciated???

I know that this is an older post, but just in case someone has a symptom of the D4 light flashing...
My 94 Accord occasionally won't run it's cruise control, and the speedo stops working, accompanied by the flashing D4 dash light. I believe the problem is caused by the VSS not working (Vehicle Speed Sensor). I'll know for sure when I get a new VSS.

I missed the original post. For the 97 accord, the OBD2 port is behind the ashtray. On the 94 accord, you have to short a blue two pin connector under the glove box to get codes.

The common diy thread on top of the gen tech help forum has instructions on how to get codes for your cars.
