Default Distributor cap - posts covered in crap

Hello,

I have an Accord '97 (EX)V6 I purchase earlier this year. The car was running a little rough so I removed the distributor cap to inspect and found all the posts inside cover large flakes almost like rust. It was a caked on. I cleaned the posts and afterwards the car ran much smother. About a month and-a-half later I checked again and found it covered in the same stuff only not as bad as before. Also, the distributor cap does not have gasket. The make of the Dist cap is Hatachi. Is this the Honda brand?

The previous owner gave me receipts of work done to the car that included a tuneup that was completed around Oct of 2008. Unfortunatetly, it did not mention what work was actually done as part of the tuneup. What could be causing this stuff forming on the distributor posts?

Thanks

I've noticed a white corrosion product on distributor posts, but very limited. Do you live near seashore. Salt atmosphere causes a white, powdery corrosion on aluminum surfaces. i think those posts are aluminum, but not sure.

You might want to replace the distributor cap seal, although the cap has a ventilation port. A new distributor cap might help also.

good luck

I live in S Fl but no where near the ocean. The previous owner lives in my area but I don't know the complete history of the car. The dist cap did not have a seal so wondered if that may have been the issue.

Mine get a crusty black/grey deposit, but it doesn't seem to affect anything about performance. I scraped it off occasionally anyway. Try a new cap and rotor; maybe the rotor tip gap is too large?
