Default Expected life of distributor cap

What is the expected life of a distributor cap and rotor. What is the best cap and rotor to install? I have noticed a tremendous about of oxidation on the cap (ionization) after 4K miles[&:] Shouldn't a cap and rotor last 10k miles?

yeah, it should last longer than that...and the best cap in my opinion is OEM.

any cap that will say "Made in Japan" will be good - everything that says made in China or made in USA will be bad
