Drive-axle/Transmission Grinding
Hey All,
Done a bit of poor-man repair to my 2001 Honda Accord 2.3L 5-speed california emissioned POS (sorry, emission system failure cost me $2700).
Under very specific conditions when I make right hand turns, my Honda makes a particularly wonderful grinding sound. My Haynes manual says it is the differential gears in the transaxle...I really hope that's not it.
My question is whether or not it could be the half-shaft between the driver's side CV Axle and the transaxle. I have already replaced both CV axles, and a few suspension components (lower control arms and swaybar links). There are definitely a few groans that are suspension related, but I didn't replace upper control arms or shock/struts so I'm not too worried about them.
The very specific conditions are as follows:
-In-gear (or entering gear), decelerating, around a sharp right-hand corner.
I've changed transmission fluid and checked the dust guards on the front brakes. Any ideas?
Thank you guys very much,
-Brian

After-market axles are available for < $100, but some (I'm one) have had problems w/ quality of after-market axles (AZ, ORiellys, et al). OEM are good axles and can't go wrong w/ them, but a bit pricey.
I wound up purchasing Raxles for about $100 each exchange and have been pleased w/ their performance.
good luck

Were those the half-shafts or the CV Axles? Hondapartsunlimited.com shows the CV Axles at the prices you said (I actually used Cardone refurbs to replace mine). I think the inner half-shaft on the driver's side is more expensive, looking like $200 on that site.
Does Raxles have a catalog or do you need to email them for a quote?
Thanks!
