ECU code retrieval

There is a way to retrieve obd2 ecu trouble codes by a series of turning the ignition on and off. I did it before but lost the instructions. Does anyone know the sequence? Thanks.

well if you want the dash to flash you have to jump the trouble code box in the starboard pass side kick panel.
