Default EGR Valve

Hello Accordians,
I recently got a 2000 Honda accord EX V6 (3.0L) and realised that the previous owner had removed the check eng light so when I put it back I got two codes, namely
P1457 and P1491.

I read that P1457 is above the EVAP emmissions and is not a serious problem, but I am concerned about P1491 , insufficient EGR lift. Right now I do not have any issue with idling/starting/running of my engine.

I read a lot about the P1457 in this forum but somehow could not locate any place where I could see how I can check the EGR valve by itself i.e. pin outs, giving 12v signals and testing for actuation type DIY's so that I can eliminate the EGR valve not working issue and the proceed to opening the intake(which for a newbie and first time car owner like me is quite overwhelming).
Mine is a 6 pin EGR valve. I would like to do some basic test like providing power and checking if the valve actually opens up or not?
Does it necessarily need a vaccum pump to complete the test?
If so, can anyone give me any hints/point me to some links as to which hoses to remove on a 2000 honda accord type( i see that there are difft Pos/Neg type EGR valves)

Please pardon me if my search on this topic was not complete and I missed it somewhere...

are you poppin a CEL now?? if not they could have the parts replaced and didn’t clear the codes from the ECU. SO when you go to scan the codes they are still stored on the ECU. Clear the ECU and you should be fine...or until you pop a CEL again then you can go from there.

Yes I am having a CEL and the error codes too. I cleared them once by removing the Clock Fuse and after 3 drive cycles like it is supposed to do , it came back. So they are there for a reason I believe..

Sorry I did not mention about that before.

there is a write up , first page DIY section..... How to clear egr ports ... v6,,,,,,,
as for p1457 needs to be diagnosed could be a simple vacc hose leak to needing replacement of components.............what i have seen a lot go bad on that code,, are the 2 way valve, evap bypass solenoid and the vent shut valve ,, all located at left rear of car by gas tank ( frt ),,,this code will not affect how car drives but if you have emissions testing in your state it will fail emissions ,,

Thanks deserthonda. I had a look at the page before seeking help, infact I tried to read as much as possible on the EGR thing.

For a newbie like me, it is a little daunting to remove the engine cover.. So I thot if I can bench test the EGR valve for its operation then it would be better, cos it it is just a problem with valve I can replace it easily.
But looking at what you are saying it appers that the most common cause is blocking of EGR port..

One question, If I have to perform the TSB as in that thread, do I have to do the washing of all the parts as shown there and replace all the gaskets with new ones?

Also do I have to use any specific cleaning liquid?

Any good tool to clean up the port rather than the drill bit to which the soot can stick so that I dont let it fall into the pit?

Yes I will look into the P1457 later as I am in MI and its not a concern.. EGR appears to be a little important for engine saftey right?

PS. It appears that you could be from AZ! ))))) AZ rocks big time..

If you unplug the EGR valve, there is a 6-pin connector on it.

It is numbered:
123
4x6
There is no wire in the #5 spot. Check the wire colors, there should be wht/blk, yel/blu, grn/blk, pnk, blk.

I am looking at the 98-02 shop manual that you can download from the spooner link I posted in the online manuals thread in the DIY section. It covers cars that aren't sold in the US, so the wire colors could be different. Check that the wire colors are the same before you proceed.

The pnk (#4) and blk (#6) wire are 12V and ground respectively.

If you have a 12V battery for a battery powered drill, that will make testing simpler. Just hook up the + of the battery to the pnk wire and the - to the blk on the EGR valve. The valve should open.

Thanks a lot PAhonda on the advice.

Now for the shop manual, this is a mystery to me,

I only see
Accord 1998-2000 CG7 CG8 CG9 CH1 CH2 CH5 CH6 CH7 CH8 CL3 ESM EDM .iso

I did not find 98-02. And the above though says 2000, it does not really cover 2000. It is mainly a 1998.

Please link that to me if possible.. I did try to look at it again but it is apparently splipping my eyes

That is the one I am referring to. It should be pretty similar to your car. Always check the wire color in case honda made a change.
