Egr valve check!

Egr valve check!
I've looked at countless videos on youtube about The EGR valve. I have a P0401 Code I don't want to spend $123.00 on a new egr valve only to find out that it's clogged ports. I have a 2000 accord SE. How can I Check the EGR valve before spending the money to replace it. HELP!!

I moved to get better response.
P0401 usually means clogged distribution of EG from EGR valve to intake manifold runners. I think on 2000 Accord, you have to remove throttle body to access EGR passages and clean.
You can check EGR function by using a vacuum pump or direct vacuum from engine to EGR valve. It should move and engine should stumble when EGR valve is forced open at idle.
If EGR valve moves and no engine response, the EGR valve or EG passages are blocked. In my experience it's always the passages and not the EGR valve.
Suggest getting a Honda Shop Manual. automanualsource on ebay has your manual for $21.99. I've bought two from him w/ good results.
good luck

P0401 is usually the EGR port(s) like TexasHonda stated. Generally not the EGR valve though, as that gives a different code. Refer to this thread regarding removing the top half of the intake manifold to clean the egr port(s) on for the 4 cylinder.

EGR valve
Thanks to both of you that replied. I block the egr valve with a gasket made from a aluminum can (youtube video) The car still idled rough and there was little in the way of performance change. So now I will attempt to disassemble the top part of the intake and clean the clogged ports. Doesn't appear to have the removeable plate that Iv'e seen on some honda intakes. If anyone knows where to find a drawing of the intake system online, I'd appreciate any help. thanks .

A rough idle may not be cured by EGR cleanout, particularly since complete blockage of EGR did not change the rough idle.
Your diagnostic procedure simulated the same blockaget that likely exists. A better diagnostic is to deliberately force the EGR valve open at idle. If idle does not stumble, you know that blockage exists. If idle stumbles the EGR passages are open. Partially blocked (some open/some blocked) could perhaps cause a lean miss (too much EG into one port).
good luck
