check the dipstick to check your oil level. the oillight only comes on when you have so little oil that your oil pump is starving. its best not to let it get that far down. if the oil light (oil pressure light) does come on pull over and shut the car off immediately or you will risk extensive engine damage(engines don't run well/long without lube).

i check my oil every other time i fill up with gas

Check oil level with dipstick. Often. I check mine once a week because its very easy to check.

Unless you want to get an oil pressure gauge, you have to trust the warning lamp. Yes, it doesnt go off until the pressure is so low that its almost too late. But still, its not terribly common for pressure to fail. Its more common for people to allow the oil LEVEL to get low.

is the high oil level by dipstick a problem? I checked the oil level after doing ~426miles, the oil level is unchanged. I don't think honda accord (unlike Merc- have A170cdi) warns about high oil level.

High oil level becomes a problem when the crank whips it up into a foam. If it does enough for the oil pickup to suck foam instead of oil, then your engine will not be properly lubricated.

Before you get too nervous, I really dont know HOW HIGH it needs to get before this happens.

I rarely check my oil... I just keep track of my driving habits and know how much oil I'll burn in however many miles. I can usually go from oil change to oil change from the high mark to the low mark.
