Default Engine replacement compatibility

OK, checked DIY, did forum search, etc, but the exact situation I did not find and I really need to know before spending money. Have 97 Accord SE, non VTEC, 2.2. Need replacement engine. Some tell me that it has to be exact replacement to prevent codes. From what I read, seems to be F22B2. (Car is not here, so I can't just go check the engine. But, I did find a 96 engine which the seller says will work without problems. Is this correct? What can I use without modification?

96/97 f22b2 are identical.

Go to car-part.com to look up engines for your 97 SE in junkyards. The engines listed once you search are the ones that are identical (96/97 LX, DX, SE).

A 96/97 EX engine will work, but you will have some other stuff to do to get it to run properly (ECU and wiring up the V-tec).

you can swap any F or H series engine into your engine bay. But the most painless way is to get the same engine you have now. But if you want more power then you can swap for better engine.
