Hi! New member! I have an '89 accord (carb) .After running it about a mile, it stalls at stops. When driving, it runs great, but when I come to a light,, it stalls out, but will start right up. (Its an automatic) I tuned it up, changed everything, including both fuel filters. Checked the vacumn hoses and didn't find any off or broken. checked the EGR valve, and it moves freely! I'M STUMPED! Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Don

Hello Don & Welcome to the forums
A few possibilities for you...
1. The transmission's torque converter is not unlocking, causing a stall when you come to a stop. This fits your symptoms, since the vehicle's ECU will not command lockup until engine temperature rises above a certain point (after driving a few minutes.) Unfortunately, this usually means there is a problem with the valve body/solenoids inside the transmission, or the torque converter itself, or (rarely) the vehicle's computer. The reason it causes a stall is that the trans is "locked" in 4th gear, and doesn't downshift into 1st when stopping, sort of like forgetting to push in the clutch when stopping in a standard trans. car.
2. The idle air passages in the carb are clogged. When you start and first drive the vehicle, the choke plate is partially closed, increasing vacuum inside the carb. This extra vacuum may be enough to help suck enough air past the idle air passages to overcome a partial obstruction. However, once it warms up a bit and the choke opens, there's no longer enough venturi vacuum to overcome the obstruction, and the vehicle stalls at idle. Solution here would be a carb rebuild or replacement.
