Default Engine or Transmission??

1994 honda accord lx 195K miles.

my honda hesitates, and jerks, when it is climbing up a slope or a bridge. is it the engine or the transmission? at first i thought the transmission was slipping, but then i noticed that during the jerk, the rpm drops, i would think that if the transmission slips, the rpm would rise, instead of slip wont it? does anybody have any ideas or test to determine what is the problem? if it is the engine, i can get is tuned or fixed, if it is the trans, then it is not worth it

Does the check engine light turn on or the D4 light start flashing?

When were the maintenance items changed like spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor, air filter? Have you ever cleaned the EGR ports?

Default Egr

Aha. Yes. My check engine light has been on for (i hate to admit it but..) more than a year now. i was told the code was a EGR valve blocked msg. do u think a blocked egr could cause the jerking at high loads condition?

An EGR problem can cause the car to run rough.

The EGR ports likely need cleaned. See hondadude writeup in the DIY Answers section. That will not cause the CEL to turn on, but you should do it.

You will still have to test the EGR valve. The vacuum hose should have no vacuum when the engine is warmed up and at idle (~750 rpm). When you raise the rpm, the EGR valve should get vacuum.

I would recheck the codes (see DIY section writeup on how to get CEL codes). Also download the 94 shop manual from the online manuals thread in the diy section.
