Default Fan Runs After Car Is Turned Off

Hey everyone,
My husband and I have a 2004 Honda Accord LX. We bought it used about two years ago. The fan always runs for about 15-30 minutes after we shut the car off. We took it to our trusted garage and they checked the wires in it and they are all in tact and they said the only thing left to check was the computer in it and that we unfortunately have to take it to a Honda dealer. We haven't taken it to the Dealer yet because we called them and they said a new computer would cost $600.00. EEK!! They can test it for 50 bucks and it could possibly just need re programed. If that's the problem. Anybody have any ideas as to what the problem could be? The guys at the garage said it's draining our battery and we need a new. The battery is only a year old. HELP!!

Humm....not sure where you live and the outside temp. Is there a slight delay from the time the engine off, key off and then the fan turns on and runs?

Usually Honda's will run the fan after the car is off for some period of time if one of the sensors detects the engine temp is above the set limit.

So in short, more details needed, this sounds normal.....I would worry about checking the coolant level, do the fans cycle on and off when the car is running, do they run when the ac is turned on.

The radiator fan is suppose to stay running for a bit after the car is turn off if it is over a certain temperature (e.g., hot).

With that said, it shouldn't always run every time after you turn off the car though. Like poorman212, check the coolant level even though you had brought the car to a trusted garage. The draining of the battery would be a concern.

This link talks about a possible bad radiator fan relay, located in your under-hood fuse/relay box. If you see a similar relay in the box, try swapping it to see if there is a difference after the next few time you drive. Copy & paste the link without the quotation marks (" ") to view.

Is this a 4-cyl or a V-6?

I used to have a 2003 4-cyl, but don't have that shop manual any more. I think it wasn't until 2005 that the ECU was involved AT ALL with the fan-control scheme. So I'm just a bit skeptical about replacing the ECU.

I don't remember ours ever running the fan after shutting off the engine. But it was my daugher not me who was the primary driver of that car.

When you check the coolant level, check it IN THE RADIATOR not just in the overflow tank.

How does the temperature gauge behave when driving? When idling?

The cars coolant levels are normal and the temperature gauge is always normal while driving. The car is a V6.

There is a radiator fan switch on the radiator that could be faulty. When you first start up the car in the morning when the engine is cold, do both fans turn on immediately?

Also, in the common diy thread on top of the gen tech help forum, there is a link under the 7th gen accords where you can download an 03-06 shop manual that may help you out.

So we took the car to the garage again to have the heat sensor changed. That didn't fix the problem. Since our car is a V6, it does not have a radiator switch. It looks like we have to take the car to the Honda garage and pay them way too much to check and re program or replace the computer. :-(

Have you checked the radiator fan relay and the fan control relay as shown in the link above?

Edit: Since yours is a V6, you have the additional fan control relay too.

I have Honda Accord 2005 V6 3.0 Engine. When I turned on the AC, the engine start building up temperature. Both radiator and condenser fans runs but I noticed that the fan speed doesn’t change like it used to be before now. Anybody have idea why the fan speed is not changing?
