Typically a bad resistor will cause you to loose fan speeds.

2000, 4 dr: slight variation on this thread. Cold start, heater fan works fine in all speeds. After 1/2 - 3/4 hr fan gradually slows down and stops (takes a few minutes). Seems to be the same on all speed settings. After cooldown period, fan works again, but slows down again. Ideas?

it's either going to be the blower resistor or the blower motor itself...most likely the resistor as the previous guy said

Since it works at all speeds, worn motor brushes (not repairable) is more likely fault.

Theoretically, as brush spring contact weakens due to worn brush, resistance might increase leading to lower speed. However, this is not the usual pattern for worn brush failure, as intermittent on/off faults and failure of fan motor to restart are typical.

If slowing speed happens at max fan position, then resistor is unlikely since max fan speed directs 12v w/o any step-down resistance to fan motor.

good luck

Thanks for the info: after 315K miles, I guess it's time to expect something to fail. The video referenced above certainly shows how easy it is to replace the motor and resistor. But since it's 10 degrees out and I have no garage, it'll have to wait for warmer weather. I'll use the cold weather to search out the parts. Thanks again.

My 2002 lost speeds 1 & 2. Changed resistor, now only speed 4. Tested the resistors, the new one is good, the old one is still good for speeds 3 & 4. Should I get 12v at each wire from switch to resistor?

The blower always gets 12v, the resistor varies the ground.

I think, bad memory, there is a difference between the six cyl and four cyl blower resistors....or I could be thinking of the 7th gens?

4 cyl and 6 cyl use different resistors. The one I bought looks identical to the OEM.

Default fan switch issue

Hi all,

Revisiting a post back in 2007. My "new" 98 Accord is having this issue. Your suggestions are to replace the blower motor transistor. However, no one carries such a part. Rock Auto, Auto Zone, Advanced or Napa. Any suggestions other than mentioned to get the part? I know if I go to the Stealership its going to cost me a first born my house and the left front tire off a Maserati!!

On a 98 Accord EX, it has a blower motor resistor. I see that part at Rockauto, Autozone, etc. One of your previous threads seems to mentioned you have an Accord coupe ULEV.

Only the 1998 EX with V6, with auto-climate control, used a blower motor power transistor.
