Default Fuel filter

My car has problems with the transmission while in overdrive. Before I came to that conclusion, I ask the delearship about changing the fuel filter (thinking that may help) and they told me that I should never have to change the fuel filter because it is inside the fuel tank. Is that right?

Thanks, Kim
