Default Fuel pump ?

Hi All, I have a bunch of ?'s for you.

95 Accord EX wagon automatic / 165,000 miles

A few weeks ago it got hesitant to start (turned over fine though) and would only run for a 1/2 second or so and after numerous tries (5-10 times) it would start right up and run perfect for the next few days or even a week..

Last week it did it again and died on the highway, waited a few minutes, turned it over 5-10 times and it ran again for a few miles, after 3 times of this, I got it home.

I replaced the main relay under drivers side dash and exact problem still persists. I have to replace my gas guage sending unit anyway so dropped the tank and found the fuel pump screen to be nice and clean, no crude in tank either.

Can I have the fuel pump tested this way, with tank out of car ?

Even if good, should I still replace it ?

Could the fuel filter just be clogged ? May have never been replaced, who knows, I only had car for 2+ years.

I know the fuel pump is on R, sending unit on L, what are the red and white things in the middle ? Mouse on image for large pic.

THANK YOU !!

Since you have the tank out, I would replace the fuel pump. Too much trouble to put back together and find the pump is intermittent. I had this happen last year on my 94Ex.

You don't know if problem is fuel or ignition as yet. Pump may be the problem but be prepared to find that ignition is the problem.

Red and white parts are probably part of evaporative emissions recovery system. See emissions section of shop manual.

good luck

Thanks for the info !

Do you know what the waxy brownish/yellowish gunk is on all the nuts of sending unit and fuel pump ? A sealer of some sort ?

Probably a corrosion preventive measure. These nuts/bolts are in a bad location for corrosion due to road salt. There may be a product from Honda or auto parts store for this purpose.

good luck
