Question Fuel Warning Light brightens and dims, doesn't just come on

1997 Accord EX wagon

When I run low on fuel, the fuel light comes on but it doesn't just turn on and stay on. It will brighten and dim based on how little fuel I have left.

For example, when I just start to run low on gas the light will come on very dimly. It is hard to see. In fact as I go up and down hills, it will brighten and dim as the gasoline sloshes around and affects whatever float valve is in there.

As I continue to drive without filling up, the light will gain in brightness until it is eventually at full brightness and going up/down hills doesn't affect it.

It's a little funny, but I suspect this is not how the light should function. What can I do to make the light come on and stay on at full brightness from the get-go?

Thanks for your help.

IIRC, that was how the low fuel indicator was on the 5th gen Accords.

Whereas, on later generation Accords, the low fuel indicator light stays on if it is low.

I had no idea this was the way it was supposed to work. I have never seen a low fuel light work like that. Thanks for the responses! I won't try to fix it now.

True. This is very normal on older cars. I too have the same thing going on, on my 96 accord but not on my bmw and evo.

Glad your worry free now.
