head bolts
i'm putting a new head on my 98 accord, but don't have new head bolts. i was wondering just how critical it was to have new bolts? i dont have the money to get them right now, but the car has to get fixed.
If you can get a tap long enough, chase the threads in the block to clean them. Blow out holes and lube bolts w/ motor oil. This helps to torque to spec w/o "chattering", but some may chatter anyway. You need a 12-pt socket on the bolts.
Watch out for the one long bolt near middle on back side. I don't think shop manual mentions this. I had to search until I found the correct hole for the bolt.
good luck

thank u guys! some one was giving me crap about re-usaing the head bolts. i just wanted to make sure itd be ok. i believe theyre sposed to be torqued at 12 but im not sure. im not that far yet anyway, im just in the process of the tear down
I just took at your other thread. Make sure that you have the new cylinder head milled so it is perfectly flat. If the head is warped, then you will have to redo the head gasket job. It would also be a good idea to have them check that it can hold pressure.
You are going to have to put the old intake on the new cylinder head, so you will have to do some work on the intake.
The short answer is that I don't know about removing the entire intake and cylinder head together. You can give it a shot. Having the intake on the cylinder head may not allow you to lift the cylinder head high enough to get it over the dowels.
You should be able to take off the upper part of the intake manifold and keep the throttle body attached. That will only be 5-6 bolts. You will have to unplug stuff from the throttle body. That will give you enough clearance to remove the lower part of the intake with the cylinder head attached.

i have everything unplugged, wires and hoses. ive removed the bolts that attach the head and intake, and im just hoping i dont have to remove the whole intake and throttle body just to get the head off bc there are bolts snug to the firewall that i cant get to. so im hoping i can just take off exaust manifold and leave the intake unbolted, and just pull it off like that
