Question Head gasket......95 Accord LX Coupe.... How Long?

I'm about to do the head gasket. For anyone who has done it before how long did it take? I'm assuming a 6 hour time frame if I get a replacement head. The girl who had the car before me was driving it for a long time with water in the oil, the car does not overheat so I assume she had no idea there was water in the oil.

If I upgrade to a F22B1 head what else would I need besides the complete head, valve cover, distributer, ecu and of course the wire ran to the VTEC?

Thanks, Johnnie

That all depends on your experience as a DIY mechanic along with the tools that you have.

That job is pretty involved, since you should replace the timing belt with the head off. 6 to 12 hours of work is a reasonable time frame.

Thanks. I did a little more research on swapping to VTEC and on a SOHC motor doesn't seem to be worth it. Although I did find a couple deals locally and I can get all the parts involved for the swap for a little less than $200. Thats a complete, used, working F22B1 head, distributor and ECU. Obviously then I would need a gasket kit and timing belt kit plus I may need to send the head to the machine shop.

As for experience I've done head swaps on numerous 5.0 mustangs and also SBCs and SBFs. This is my first head gasket on an OHC vehicle though but I've done timing belts before. I also have all the tools to do the job, unless teres some special ones that aren't covered in the manual.

I'm about to order the head gasket kit......any last input or good reasons to swap to a F22B1?

Get a Honda crank pulley removal tool, you'll be glad you did! (It holds the crank while you loosen the bolt)

I recently replaced the head gasket on my '94 Accord and it took me several weekend, but I was taking my time, but it will take several days at least if you have to take your head somewhere when it's appart.

It's not a horrible job, the intake manifold bolts and gasket are probably the worst part.

I did a head gasket on a F23A1 about a month ago and it took about 10 hours going slow.
