Default Heater is stuck on and maybe how to remove a dash?

Lets see...
The car is a 1996 Honda Accord LX. It has a 5 spd and the F22b2 (4cyl) (i assume at least).
The issue is that the heat is stuck on. I do believe its just the dial for the hot/cold. The fan speed still works and the vent buttons work. So I don't know if this is a common problem in the fifth generation accord or not. Probably not knowing my luck. I am guessing this is not something i can just bang out in a few minutes. I haven't looked at the dash too much right now. I am figuring that i will be having to take apart the dash to get to the Hvac controls. Any one know where i can find some tips or could do some quick steps for me to do this with out looking all over for what needs to be unscrewed/unclipped. Well Thank you for the help ahead of time.

I hope this is complete enough anymore information just ask and i will try to include anything else.

actually i think it might be easy to fix . my 94 had the same problem. the temp control just pulls a cable that attaches just below the right of the center console and behind/under the glove box.

behind the glove box is the evaporator assembly, just a big black box.(you can kick it with your foot from the passenger side seat) i believe the cable will be down to the left from there kind of near the floor vent. it attaches to a small metal support tab and then the end attaches to a mechanism where it pulls and pushes the control door inside the system. this is where your problem lies. the cable needs adjusted, the door probably wont close right and allows air to blow over the heater core.

dettach the cable from the mechanism at the end and push the mechanism all the way towards the front of the car with your hand. then turn the cold/hot dial all the way to the cold side. then adjust the cable so that it snuggly fits between the support tab and the mechanism. make sure it retracts and pushes fully by testing the dial. should fix it.

sorry i cant supply pictures. hope it helps you may wanna search for an online manual for additional help. good luck!

In addition, there should be ANOTHER cable from there out to the engine compartment. Find the heater valve (#1) on the heater hose. Verify that it actually moves when someone moves the temperature-control **** back & forth. (maybe need the key on???)

Either one of those cable might be broken, or if you're lucky maybe just disconnected.

This doesn't look like it's gonna result in a new long procedure write-up, so I'll move it to General Tech.

ok i took a peek at it this evening didn't really have the energy to do anything but i am wondering if i removed the glove box would it make it easier to figure this out? I don't know exactly how to do that if anyone has any suggestions. but it is pretty tight quarters down there obviously.

i guess my question is for both clutch and jimblake. so clutch are you speaking of the piece that jimblake is speaking of (number 1)? I ask because as the diagram looks it looks like a cable attaches to that piece. I tried to see if anything moved but the key was out so maybe i will try it with the key in and on (not running maybe but at least in the on position).

Thank you for the help we will see if this helps i really hope it does. any more suggestions would obviously be appreciated.

Also thanks for moving it wasn't quite sure where to put it seeing it kinda fit in both areas.

These parts pictures aren't that good for the EXACT location of the cables. From the control panel there's a cable (not shown here) that goes down to the actual heater unit. It operates a lever down there; I'm not even sure which lever in this picture.

I don't think removing the glovebox will help, because it's down lower & in the center stack. Maybe there's a panel below & left of the glovebox or something? Anyway, look down there for cables & levers moving when you turn the temperature ****. In 1998 the ignition had to be turned on but I don't know what year that became motorized.

Then from there is another cable (#10) that goes out thru the firewall to the water valve.
