My 2004 Honda Accord is making a sound that sounds like hissing. The first thing I thought of was air being let out of a tire. You can hear it off and on while car is moving but much louder when breaks are applied. Not at all while at a complete stop. I need to drive about 30 miles home like this, I hope it is ok to drive?!?!?

 

May be your brakes pads are worn, and the sound is from the wear indicator.

Yes. Almost for sure it will be your brake pads are worn, the inner pad(s).

 

Do you think they will be ok to drive 30 miles to get home? (I am a female of course)

 

Definitely you can drive it for 30 miles and more. You still have some margin to drive it for a little while. The wear indicators are on the inner pads only; but, they are softer metal than the brake rotor, so although it sounds bad, for now, it's not doing any really damage. If you continued driving it for too long like that, then damage will occur and you will need to replace the rotors (rotors are more expensive than the pads). But, depending on your driving style, you probably can go a week or so; but, the sound will get progressively louder.

Also, when getting the brake pads changed, you do not necessarily need the rotors "turned" (e.g., machined, removing some of the rotor surface), unless you have shaking (shuddering) when applying the brakes at a higher speed, say for example, a sudden stop from 60 mph. Changing just the brake pads without turning the rotors will save you some money.
