Default Help! Bent valves

Hope you can help, Grandson installed new timing belt on 2010 Accord V6, when started bent valves on one bank. Head fixed, now to reinstall, how does he time the cams so it doesn't happen again, does he need to pull the other cam before rotatin crank, that's my thought, I assume rotating by hand will still damage valves if out of time. I want to look over his shoulder and know correct steps to take. Thanks in advance, Dan

When replacing the timing belt you always rotate the crank by hand to ensure you are in time before cranking. Make sure you are looking at the timing markings and don't pull the pin until the belt is on.

You want to first loosen the cam main bolts in TORQUE SEQUENCE. Once loosened turn to sprocket to TDC. Once at TDC torque main bolts back in TORQUE SEQUENCE. Do it for both sides. Ensure your crank is at TDC. Install belt then turn 2 revolutions to ensure you are in time.

I will post a video to help you out.

This is why I paid a reputable mechanic $550 to replace the timing belt.

Changing a belt/chain is easy if you make white out marks after TDC. He probably just didn't know and made an expensive mistake but learned a valuable lesson.

Always turn crank to TDC and make whiteout marks on the sprocket and head before removing the belt/chain. That way you can't make a mistake. Before you put the cover back on turn 2 revolutions to make sure it's TDC and you're done.

To answer the original question about removing the other cylinder head, you do not have to remove the other cylinder head.

You can turn the crankshaft until the pistons are below the top the cylinder, then adjust the camshaft to tdc, then bring the crankshaft to TDC.
