Default Help!!! Prevent turnning off or removing key while in driving gear

I bought a 1998 Honda accord EX (4 dr, auto) for my son. I just realized today that the ignition key can be turn off and removed while the shift is NOT in Parking mode. I could turn off and remove the key while the engine is running. I thought all cars have the function to prevent this happening. I really worry about this and want it to be fixed as soon as possible. Does anyone know how to fix it? Thanks.

The system you are talking about is the interlock system.

There are some electrical tests to figure out why your key isn't locked into the cylinder. The problem could stem from a number of sources.

I think that you can download a 98-02 shop manual from the online manuals thread in the DIY section.

There was a recall for just this problem; I had it done on a 1998 I owned. Call any dealer & have your VIN handy. They can look up your car & tell if it's already been done.
