Default Hi guys. I'm idling too fast.

It's 1986 honda accord lx-i fuel injector. It idles at around 1100 rpm even with the idle screw tight. Smog guy didn't like that. Maybe I should mention the car was stalling in heavy stop and go traffic in a hilly area a few months ago.

Thanks for the help.

Did someone advance the idle stop to increase idle rpm? This should not be done for fuel injection cars. There is an idle air bleed screw that is used for idle speed adjustment.

Too high idle results from too much air for fuel injected car. Sources are 1) vacuum line missing, 2) PCV valve stuck open or disconnected 3) throttle plate stuck partially open (sounds like that is ruled out), 4) idle air control valve (IACV) stuck in open position, 5) intake manifold air leak, 6) fast idle cold start valve stuck in open position.

Suggest downloading one of the manuals from Online Manuals links in DiY forum for detailed procedures for your vehicle.

good luck

I don't think so.
I found the service manual.
I have a lot to learn.

TX-Why is the throttle plate ruled out? I don't see anything that rules out the TB needing a cleaning.

OP- What history do you know aout the car. Is it new to you or have you had it for some time. Also check for codes, ecu is under the drivers seat.

I found that after tightening the screw over the throttle intake(?) the rpm did go down, but not reliablly. I had to give it some time and a few good revs before it was willing to creep down to 750. I'm sure there's something I should be cleaning out. Passed the smog. Thanks for the support.

The absolute minimum I could get the rpms down to was just under 750, so that might be a yellow flag?

I'd get some throttle cleaner, old tooth brush and a few rags and go to town. Be sure to get the back side of the butterfly. EDIT: While you are opening and closing the butterfly check the linkage for "free movement". It is sometimes also suggested to remove the idle scew all the way (count number of turns so you can put it back close to where is was). Once out, clean the small little passage.
