When you consider the fact that someone that is buying a hybrid technology vehicleis buying a car that has a very short track history in regard to performance and reliability.

And again, when you factor in that you may have to replace THE BATTERY at around that $4,000 mark, what have you accomplished?

If you are trying to save money by not burning as much gasoline, you will spend whatever gas money thatyou would have saved on THE BATTERY replacement between 100,000 and 150,000 miles.

If you drive one for the enviroment, have you ever heard about the fallout from smelting the nickle that goes into those batteries in production? It is a whole lot worse than burning gasoline.

Finally, hybrids are truely an experimental car. My prediction is that in 10 years, we will remember the word hybrid car, the same as we remember the term Y2K. The term Y2K a decade ago,was a lot of hype over nothing and so is the gas / electric hybrid vehicle. They are truely a fad.

If it's a fad, it sure is a growing one. Digital TV was a fad too, until Feb. of '09.

I've got an '05Honda Accord Hybrid, and wouldn't have anything else. If you want 50 mpg. get a mule or bicycle. I enjoy the power it has, lots of "run off and leave 'em pep", and think it's a great car. The mpg avgs. around 28, which ain't all bad. I enjoy the Cadillac feel but with Vette performance. Not your granny's Olds.

The IMA battery? Not sweating it. It's only got a tad over 15k on it, and may well outlast me.
I thought this forum was for Honda fans, not slammers. There ain't no perfect car, but to me, this one is close enough. 'nuff said...

The original warranty on the IMA battery for my Insight was 6 years/ 60,000 miles. During my ownership, Honda released statements saying the were raising the warranty to 8/80,000 then to 10/100,000. Honda has a lot of faith in their technology. Now that does not mean that there haven;t been any Insight owners that have had to replace their IMA, but the number that have has not been as many as you think. At least that is what I had found during my time on Insightcetral.net.

BTW, the cost of the replacement IMA has gone A LOT from the original $4,000 price.

Feb 09 has not arrived yet. How are you saving money with Hybrid as far as Gas goes? Someone explained it well earlier that it is not worth buying the Hybrid.

The whole concept automakers are selling to the public is that, because the car runs off mostly the battery at cruising speeds and charges during deceleration, you're using less gas.

What Hondaed pointed out is that if you have to replace a $4k battery a few years down the road, you're obviously not saving any money.

not every hybrid has problems with the ima battery, of the hundreds our dealership has sold, weve maybe only put in 5-10.

The future viability is based upon whether we are able to produce smaller, powerful batteries. The technology is still in its relevant infancy but eventually the price will drop and reliability/performance will improve. At the rate we are going with gas prices though, the breakeven point of owning a hybrid is shortening to the point it almost makes economic sense. I dont see gas prices dropping that much in the future as consumption will increase as India and China continue to grow and most oil fields that are easily accesible are in decline. Then again perhaps speculators in petroleum will cause the price to collapse and we will enjoy $1 / gallon gas again and then we will all forget about hybrids.

That's not going to happen.
