Automatic transmissions do not have drain plugs. You can drop the pan and drain the fluid out of the pan and refill, but you still won't change all the fluid. Unlike the engine, a lot of fluid is still trapped inside the transmission and does not make it to the pan after you turn the car off. For this reason, the best way to change auto trans fluid is to flush it. This Thread has some info on how to flush the trans fluid. Only use Honda transmission fluid.

Honda ATs do not have a filter. Your transmission is simply a drain and fill fluid change. This should be done, depending on who you talk to every 15k-30k. I do mine every 15k ALWAYS with Genuine Honda fluid.

There is a drain plug on the lower part of the trans that has a 3/8" square hole in it.
Remove that plug with a 3/8" drive ratchet, clean off the material from the magnet attached to the drain plug. Reinstall the drain plug then put in 3 qts (actually 2.8qts) of genuine honda trans fluid.

From what I understand Honda actually does not recommend Flushing the transmission but I am sure others may disagree.

Thanks for the reply.
I also read somewhere that flushing the tranny is not a good.

If the tranny fluid is still light red is it still good?
I just bought the car so i don't know when the last time it was changed.

thanks

If the fluid is still bright red and does not smell "burnt" then it is probably ok. Having said that, if you don't know when it was changed last I would spend the $15 for fluid and crawl under the car and change it with Honda ATF-Z1. Don't forget to change the crush washer as well.

i do not recommend flushing your transmission. you do have a drain plug for your transmission, and it does take 3 quarts of honda atf-z1 which is the only lubricant that should be used in your tranny.

no i think agent was thinking of some chevys lol. turning the bolts just right so it leaks out the side so you can actually catch a little of it in a bucket. id love to see someone actually change the tranny fluid in a chevy and actually catch all of it. that would just be amazing.
