Default How do I turn off CEL

2002 Accord EX.

Check engine light is on. Not sure why, I will check it out.

What's the technique for turning it off?

First of all, find out why check engine light is on. Go to AutoZone & have them read the code with their scan tool. The data link connector is located under the instrument panel on the driver's side.
Does anything seemabnormal when you are driving? If not, did you screw thegas cap on till it clicked 3 times last time you filled up? That will cause the CEL to come on (it happened to me and I was like WTF?)
After the problem has been resolved, remove the # 13 fuse (located in passenger side fuse/relay panel)for 10 secondsto clear the codes.

I started the car with the fuel cap off and drove it 50 feet. Not sure if that's the problem. The car operates fine. I will have it checked out though.

Isn't there a way to turn it off by holding the trip meter button or something? ThoughtI heard that somewhere...

that trip meter "trick" is for resetting your Maintenence required light, if the car seems/feels fine I would probably tighten down the gas cap then reset the light and see if it comes back, if it does get the code read.... This isn't the best way to go about things but it is the easiest.... Ideally you should have the codes read to find out for sure what's wrong

Nasty is right. The odometer trip button trick is only for the "mainenance required" light - different form CEL. If you know the security code to your radio, you can simply disconnect the negative battery cable and leave it disconnected for about five minutes, hook it back up and the lightshould be reset. That is how I reset mine, but mine is a 2000 LX and doesn't require a security code in radio.

Maintenance required lamp is simply triggered by mileage - it's a reminder to change your oil.

1) Key OFF.
2) Press & hold the odometer reset button.
3) Continue to hold the button while turning the key ON (don't need to actually start the engine).
4) Continue to hold the odometer reset button forever - well, maybe about 20 seconds.
5) The Maint.Req. lamp will flash a few times then stay off.
DONE.
