Default how do you recycle used auto fluids

Its easy to recycle used motor oil. Not quite so with transmission fluids, brake fluids, and power steering fluids. The auto parts store don't take them back. To those of you who are not mechanics, how do you recycle them?

Honda dealerships typically take them back provided we take the fluids back in the same container as it was sold. So I am forced to buy fluids from them, just so that I can recycle them back.

all the fluids mentioned are oils ..... Strauss near me throws them in with the recycled oil. Especially tranny fluid ..... that's the same thing as motor oil with a few additives and red dye.

I agree. I mix trans fluid and I save old brake fluid for use as a cleaner on brake parts (no solvents are recommended).

good luck

How about antifreeze? Its not oil and is poison. How do you recycle coolant?

This is not federally regulated. Each state has their own set of impractical guidelines. No easy solution here that I know of.

good luck

The Strauss Auto near my house has a separate container for it.

Check your local sewage-treatment department. Anti-freeze is sometimes OK to pour down the drain. It's a heavy alcohol, and itis bio-degradable. Its not particularly healthy for home septic systems; it can disrupt the little critters in your septic tank.

Antifreeze is usually ethylene glycol; the green stuff anyway. It is poisonous, so I doubt that anyone wants it in their groundwater via leaky sewage pipes. Amsoil uses propylene glycol which is safe, but I doubt the sewage authorities recognize the different fluids.
