Default How to get better gas mileage 2009 4 cyl accord wauto

I want to increase my mileage on 2009 accord coup 4cyl auto. It seems to shift at 2000 RPM from 1st to 2nd but I cannot get it cruise at low RPMs in D like 900RPM.

Any help to make adjustments are welcomed

You can't change gear ratios or shift points to lower rpm. All you can do is slow down. RPM's are set to optimize engine power/efficiency/acceleration. Some compromise is necessary to balance competing values.

There are plenty of things to do to reduce gas consumption:

1) drive slower is largest factor
2) avoid use of AC when possible (in Houston that is practically never!)
3) keep tire air pressure at high end of acceptable range, usually about 35 psi
4) driving habits; avoid jack-rabbit starts, resist urge to pass all vehicles, allow vehicle to slow on grades rather than downshift to maintain speed.

good luck

If you geared the transmission/final drive to run at 900 RPMs at highway speeds, you'd destroy the engine in a few thousand miles.

As others have said, if you want better gas mileage, keep your foot out of it.

To add: maintenance, get low roll resistance tires when replacing tires, etc.

Thanks to all.

The problems I encounter are when starting from a start rpms run up to 2000 rpm before the first gear change. Also driving down hills the transmission hold the car back therefore there is much less roll as seen with a Camry.

On the highway rpms stay at 1500 rpms in high gear.

This seems to me to be very problematic in terms of better gas mileage.

I have a Camry which is also a 4 cyl it gets much better mileage drien the same way.

No jack rabbit starts, proper inflation, clean air filter, recommended oil, no AC on unless needed and even there it is recommended at times for good gas mileage,

Sounds like your car is operating as designed.
