Default ignition timing

i have a accord type r 1999, i wanted to check my ignition timing with my light, but noticed there was no marks on the bottom pulley for reference. i checked to see if they had broke off but the casing was ok. how do i check the timing now.

thanks

Most of this is controlled by the PCM.

On the pulley there should be some marks, the paint has prob come off and rust has set in. Total of four (? memory sucks) - one is TDC then a bit away from that should be a set of three, the center of those three should be 12 BTDC. So once you loacate that mark, put some paint on it.

So now that we are done with all of that.....What issue are you trying to solve?

i have the paint marks on the pulley but abosolutely no other marks to tell me what deg TDC the car is at. what i am doing is just a check to see if all is ok. so with no point of reference i'm stuffed.

thanks

timing is not adjustable, o.e. manual states if timing is incorrect replace ecm. if you have no drivability issues or check engine lights on nothing should be wonky...

There should be a pointer molded into the lower timing cover.

yes roader there should be, that was my point, because there is not any pointer there is no way i can tell how or if the timing is out unless the ecm tells me. all the cars i have worked on all had some pointer for reference. so if my ecm tells me i have a timing issue, how do i investigate?
if i have to strip the engine how do i ensure TDC(aprt from the obvious methods).
all cars have some marks to confirm this sort of operation.

thanks

you could start from scratch, pull the plugs then turn the engine by hand to bring no. 1 to tdc. once verified you can either make a mark on the cover that lines up with the pully or make a mark where you can easily see it on the cover and then a corresponding one on the pulley (ignoring factory mark) then you can check it, but you have to jump the scs connector first to take the computer out of the loop.

If you had to replace the timing belt then there's a dimple on the crankshaft toothed gear that shows TDC.
accord type r 1999
I'm not familiar with a "Type R." Not a US model? Maybe it doesn't have an F23 as a '99 US Accord does. Post a picture of the lower timing cover so we can see what it looks like. Even if it has a different engine, it's likely that it has a TDC pointer somewhere on the lower cover.

thanks guys for your input, i have found an access hole on the bell housing under the ditributor which does have the V shaped fork, but the flywheel only has 1 mark on it. the car should run at 12deg btdc, so i suppose i will have to compensate with the dial on my gun to tell me what deg it is at. i sdont know how to post an image.

thanks
