Default Interior Driver Side Door Handle Broke

So I went to get out of my car today, and when I pulled the interior door handle, nothing happened. My friend ended up opening my door for me, then I just rolled down the window and opened it from the outside until I got home and took a look at it. After removing the interior cover on the driver side door, I looked at the mechanism that attaches the door handle to the latch and the coiled metal wires that are supposed to attach to the door handle are frayed and disconnected. How would I go about repairing this? The only thing I could think of, would be to weld them back to the handle. Is this a good idea, or is there something else I should consider?
