Does anyone have any opinion on these? Do they help w/ torque? MPG? And is there any downside? More junk getting into the engine? MOre wear? Thanks!

Default RE: K&N Air Filters

I've put K&N filters on a few cars:
1989 Saab 900
1995 Integra GSR
1998 Accord 4-cyl
2001 Saab 9³
2003 Accord 4-cyl

Barely noticable on the Accords & the non-turbo '89 Saab. On the '01Saab it was a little more noticable &it leta little more turbo whine be heard.

The GSR was most noticable, but onlyat high RPM. Still it wasn'tthat big of adifference.

I got them for the clean & re-use ability. I wasn't too surprised it didn't give me mad power.

What kind of car? Certain Accords have a mass air flowmeter in the aircleaner housing. In that case you want to be real careful not to over-oil the filter & get oil on that sensor.

I had a couple, one on my CRX Si and one on my Integra. They're convenient, because you never have to buy a filter again. If there's no parts store around the corner for you, that's a plus. They do flow more air. They also flow more dirt. This can be easily verified with an oil analysis by a firm like Blackstone Labs. More silicon, more wear metals show up in the oil than with a stock filter. Stock filters protect your engine best. If making more power isn't a huge concern, stay with stock. If you're not in it for the long run, I wouldn't worry too much. It'll be someone else's problem down the road.

David,
I was just about to order a K&N Filter for my 2006 Accord. Reading the previous posts as well as the article I've referenced below convinced me to stay with the stock filter. I keep my cars to at least 150,000 miles and am concerned about the reduced filtering capability of the K&N.

Thanks to all who have responded. I did run a K&N for about 8 months, felt like the car was slightly more powerful. But I became worried about the dirt issue, and now, I've decided to go back to stock filter. I would love to find some way of giving the car a bit more pep, though.
