Default key problems

I had Honda cut a spare key, but the thing won't work. They tried re-cutting the key severeal times and then started fresh with a new key. The new key would not work either. They said it was due to excessive wear on the cylinder and that the original key as conformed to it. They suggested a locksmith to cut an exact copy of the original. Is this expensive? I have a spare key that will open the door but not start the car. I'm kind of confused why Honda couldn't cut an exact copy of the original key? Do they just go by vin # when cutting keys?

has the ignition switch been replaced? Do you need a different key for the door?

all I've ever done was take my key into walmart and ask them to make me a copy.... that actually seems to work better for me since the machine just traces what I have already....

The 99s have a imobilizer system though. One of those copies would open the door good.

the one that will open door doesn't have the chip or whatever. had it done at a hardware store just to have a back up....i guess i need some chip or transponder or whatever its called.
the one they cut, they kept and i got my money refunded.

i guess i'll just have to take it somewhere to trace the key exactly??? 3 lock smiths said 120!!! dang...is it possible to buy an uncut key with the chip/transponder(sp?) and then take it to a hardware store and have them cut it???

if you think $120.00 is bad ask someone how much a key for a volkswagen or audi costs and then you'll know real pain.... It's all relative but I would think that honda could order you a blank chiped key to take to a locksmith and have it cut and that should only cost a few bucks + the key then...
