Low idle and stalls in d4 and reverse

If you can't get any compression in cylinder, valve damage is likely. Usually worn rings will generate some compression but low and cylinder will fire w/ pretty low compression. Valve damage seems more likely.

Make sure cylinder is getting fire before checking compression. No fire is even more likely reason for cylinder dead miss.

How can I tell if the valves are damaged?

Very low or no compression is first indicator and 2nd is to inspect the valves for excessive gap (up to 1/4" perhaps) between rocker arm and valve stem.
