Default Motor oil for 05 V6

I'm new to this forum, and a new Honda owner. Actually, the latter is not so true. I own a Honda motorcycle (Goldwing); keep your Harleys. I love American products, but I'll be riding my wing while your stuff is being worked on (let's see how many HD's can reach 250-300,000 miles!!). Also, my wife had a 93 Accord when I met her, but that was traded before long (I couldn't get used to the 4-cyl).

Last week, we purchased a new 05 Accord EX-L for her. I like the car. The V6 has plenty of guts. The amenities you get for the money is hard to beat. The road noise is a bit more than I would like, but I don't have to ride in it much so I won't complain. There are American cars that I considered, and liked a little more (the Ford 500 was my first choice - couldn't wait for the Fusion). The problem with any other car is that none retain their resale value like the Honda. I've owned so many cars in my life and would be very wealthy if I had all the money I lost on cars. So, this time I decided to buy smart!

Enough rambling. My real reason for posting is to ask for opinions on what motor oil to use in the V6. I read the book and it said to use something like a 5W-20 or something like that. I am a proponent of synthetics, and have always believed in feeding any engine the widest range of multi-viscosity available. I normally run 5W-50 in just about everything. Any other synthetic users out there? Any recommendations one best oils to use?

Absolutely! The noise you are hearing is very likely the tires. The Michelins and Bridgestones that Honda uses as OEM are loud, no two ways about it.

Going to a xW50 weight oil is a mistake, mileage and performance will suffer greatly. Use Mobil 1 5W20 or synthetic of your choice. Used oil analysis have shown the 5W20 oils, dino, synth,or blend to be very robust with extremely low wear. A 5W30 or 0W30 can be substituted if desired with no ill effects but there's no reason to do so.

Leave the factory fill oil in for 5000 miles, it is loaded with moly and helps the engine break in. Having said that, I changed mine to M1 0W20 around 3700 miles. That batch was left in for 5K, now I go 7.5-8K. The 0W20 has been dropped in favor of 5W20 to meet new guidelines for the latest API designation of "SM".

The wider the spread, the larger the amount of viscosity improvers. Oils with a wide spread tend to shear out of grade as the VI's are depleted.

Leave the 50 weight oils for European cars, supercars, and old engines that burn oil!

I just bought my 1993 at the beginning of this month, I've checked of the fluid levels and everything was correct (at that time), this morning I checked the engine oil level again and it looks like it burned almost 3 quarter bottles of oil, what do you guys think it's the problem here? also, if it is something wrong with the engine and need an expensive repair(more than $500) , is there something I can do while I get some money, like add some kind of special type of oil to the engine or.....? Please advice......

first you have to inspect it for oil leaks - sometimes cars just leak oil and not burning it - if no visual leaks found then you have to take it to the garage for internal leak inspection.

Thanks RtexasF..... Your reply is insightful and exactly what I was looking for. I have nothing but big engines (gas and diesel) and the 50W oil is almost a necessity. For that reason, I was having a problem wrapping my mind around that. I also agree that the break-in oil should remain. It goes aginst my grain to leave a natural oil in ofr 5K miles, but I know it's not completely natural, and that it should remain. Great advice. thanks a ton!

You are welcome.

I'm glad I could offer some sound advice. With big trucks that require high vis oils it's difficult to change your thinking but you MUST regarding the Honda 3.0l.
The "factory fill" is made to Honda's specs by Exxon/Mobil by the way. DO keep an eye on the dipstick during the break in period. I hawked my 2.4l 4 cylinder oil almost daily during break in. The ONE time I let it go for a week or so it was down 3/4 of a quart. Since then it has used no measurable amount between changes.
