Default Need Help with 4 cyl 1996 Accord auto Trans

looking for some help with a 96 accord auto trans. I will have to pull code tomorrow to see what they are. A little history. I bought this car about 10yrs ago for my daughter. It has close to 200000 miles on it currently. When my daughter had it, I had to replace the transmission as it would slip when in drive. After I replaced the trans, it lasted for about a year year and half. It basically did the same thing, so I replaced it with one from a salvage yard. It lasted about two years and did the same thing. It started slipping once it got hot. I noticed that you could shut the car off and restart it and it would run for a little while. My daughter got another vehicle and I got this one from her. It sat for a year. I put another trans in it about 6 months ago and gave to my friend who lives next door as she needed a car. Today she said the trans was slipping again, but if she turned the car off and restarted it, she could drive a few miles before it did it again. I will have to check code. The check engine light has been on for a while. I think it was an egr issue that threw codes a while back so there will be some old code in it. Can anyone tell me if this might be an internal issue, electrical issue or TCM issue. Need to get it fixed as this is her only means of getting to work and my wife or I will have to take her if she doesnt have a car. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Check for codes first.

You can check for engine and transmission codes the OBD1 way on the 96 accord. The common diy thread on top of the gen tech forum has a link to checking engine codes. Transmission codes are flashed by the D4 light. Or you can stop by a parts store and have them scan the OBD2 connector behind the ash tray.

Let us know what codes you have.

The 5th generation transmissions were pretty solid, so I am wondering why you have all of these failures. What kind of transmission fluid are you using? Have you checked the fluid level on the transmission?

You may want to try car-part.com for a PCM to gen an idea about the price of a PCM. I think that site calls it computer, engine. You can sort by price or distance. That will have to come from a 96/97 EX (if you have an EX accord). OR the 96/97 LX/DX if you have the LX/DX.

Pulled codes today. D$ light does not flash any> Stays on solid when in drive. Codes are:
P0171
P0420
P0401
p0715
Will have to look these up to see what they are. Again any help is appreciated.
I seem to remember the 715 code on the other trans before I changed them.

The 715 is the main shaft speed sensor......some have been able to pull it and clean the end.

The others we can deal with later......Also, instead of the D4 flashing, does it "stay on" even when the car is in Park?

no, the D4 light goes out when the car is shifted into another gear or park and is not on when in park.

Did you have the same failure in all three transmissions?

Also, check the codes the OBD1 way I mentioned before. Let us know what codes the check engine light and the D4 light flash.

You may want to disconnect and clean the bolt and eyelet of your main grounding point, G101. It is attached to the intake manifold on the driver's side of the upper part.
