What do you mean by "new cooling unit"? Details of what work was performed will help. Why was new cooling unit needed?

If AC compressor is making grinding sounds disable the compressor clutch coil so you don't engage. You are probably going to need another compressor if noise occurs only when compressor is running. This means the compressor internals are scrubbing and not the idler bearing on the AC clutch.

good luck

I had cooling unit replaced a while back because of leaking and ACworked fine until the past weekend that no cooling air coming out. I noticed that a grinding sound right at the AC compressor so I stop using AC but the grinding continues to make noise. My question is the any particular brand of AC compressor? I would have to have the AC compressor replaced asap. I have a choice to buy my own part or have the shop buys and replaces it. I only pay for labor. Thanks

If grinding sound persists w/ compressor on or off that is good news. It means the bearing in the clutch is likely failing and unlubricated ball bearings are grinding against each other. You will have to fix soon or the clutch bearing could sieze and your accessory drive belt will probably break. You should only need the clutch coil/bearing assy to be replaced, but shop may want to replace entire compressor. If you have compressor pulled and take compressor to a goodAC shop, they may repair for you for a reasonable fee.

good luck
