Default Need help! Noob here...

Hello all,

I am new to this forum and I come as a fellow Honda owner seeking information.

My brother is currently in Hawaii and is in a bit of a pickle. He hasn't had much luck with cars as of late, and being tight on money doesn't help neither.

He said he found a 2001 2door Accord LX for sale with 120,000k miles on it for $2700. great price, but high mileage.

I told him that perhaps he could get an engine swap. I know Honda is pretty well known for their engine compatibilities, at least for the newer K-Series engines. I have a 2005 Civic Si, which has the K20A3 motor in it.

But as for a 2001 Accord, that is why I am here. I tried first finding the engine code for the 01 LX's... F23A1 or F23A4? I wasn't sure.

So mainly these are my questions:
1. What is the engine code for a 2001 Accord 4cylinder LX?
2. Is it easy to find another motor?
3. If so, is it worth the money? (i.e, is it more hassle than it's worth to replace)
4. Anything else that may lead me in the right direction

Any help would greatly be appreciated guys. Thanks!

120,000?Thats nothing to be quite honest. More than likely that motor is the F23a1,the A4 is the ULEV engine. And yes it is very easy to find another 4 cyl F23 in the Continental US,May be different in Hawaii. Is it a manual? If not,be aware that the 98-02 accord have, how do i put this, Horrific auto transmissions.

1. F23A1 is the VTEC motor, 49 state emissions; F23A4 is VTEC, California emissions. The A1 says VTEC on the valve cover while the A4 says ULEV.

2. Fairly easy, maybe not in Hawaii though.

3. It should be a direct replacement. I wouldn't expect a show to charge more than $1500 for the swap including labor.

4. 120,000 is not a high mileage Honda. 120,000 and $2,700 sounds fishy. I paid $4,700 for my 99 Accord with 164,000 on it.

You won't be able to swap in a K engine without fairly deep pockets.

haha, 120k is nothing. that's what i like to hear. yea, i told him if the motor was kept in good maintenance then it should still run for a bit.

And good point, Hawaii probably won't have the availability like in the continental US.

Maybe 120k miles is high for Hawaii? After all, you can't drive 500 miles in any direction, right?

Still, with good maintenance, the engine should be OK. Can I guess a couple things??
1 - You aren't in Hawaii to look at the car yourself?
2 - Your brother might not be mechanically inclined to inspect the car himself?
A good inspection before buying would be nice.

Is the car an automatic transmission or a manual? Because if it is an automatic, the tranny is guarenteed to die and then you will have to get a rebuilt which will die again. If it is a manual it will last forever.
