Default need a new catalytic converter. which to replace with

as title states, our accord needs a new cat. obviously an oem honda one is really expensive and want to go save a bit of money with going aftermarket.
here is the description to one I am thinking of getting from rockauto. Should work find without throwing a cel right?

BOSAL Part # 0993672 Direct Fit; Not Legal For Sale in the State of California Direct Fit
Sedan, Coupe; Federal Emissions; O2 Sensor in Center; Standard Load

I can't verify the proper part #, but Bosal is OK stuff. They're not a junk fly-by-night company.

well I just noticed another bosal cat from rockauto wth the same description.
one is $135 and one is $340. should i opt for the pricier one since its a ULEV engine?

ULEV engine never came with manual trans. Has the engine been swapped? If so, is it actually operating as a ULEV? What ECU is being used?

If it's really the ULEV engine, you'll have to be careful about getting the proper cat. I don't know if the price difference is LEV vs. ULEV or something else.

I say its a ULEV because the valve cover says ULEV-Vtec on it. dont know if that is a silly assumption to make or not.

We had the car since new so no engine swapping and I dont know how to check the ECU in the accord.

found this, so looks like they did put ULEV in MT accords in 01
http://www.hondareports.com/specific...w-side-airbags

we actually have two 01 accords now, one EX and one LX and both have the same valve cover saying ULEV.

You're right, I guess that's different from year to year. I remember looking up for someone else, but it might have been 1999 & I assumed it was the same for all 98-02.

I just looked up, & it seems to be different converter according to Honda's part number. DX, LX, EX all have the same converter but the EX-ULEV shows a different one. So when you find a converter, be sure the applications list makes a difference between the converter for a ULEV engine vs. a non-ULEV engine.

I don't actually know WHAT the difference is.

I'd like to know how you made out. The original in my '98 was replaced with an inexpensive 3rd party which lasted about 3 years. I was faced with replacing it again, so I opted to go the OEM/Honda route, which probably added $300, but I'm hoping it never needs to be repaired again.

I ended up going with that bosal that I had mentioned. cost me $300 shipped off amazon. got it on the car, everything fit no problem and no CEL from it. car is running good and quiet. Still have a CEL from the egr but at least its not from the cat!

There's a lot of cheap aftermarket "cats" that are little more than a test-pipe. Gotta be careful what you buy. But like I said, Bosal is a major supplier of exhaust & catalyst stuff.
