Default Need new muffler for '95 Accord

I am a new member.

I discovered my '95 4dr Ex has a muffler split end to end the other day. Sounds lousy. Local dealer want $350 to replace it. I can probably do it myself with help from son.

Where is the best place to get a quality replacement at a decent price?

Any help will be appreciated.

Dan

Hope I posted this satisfactorily!

Welcome!
This is just a board for welcome & introduction postings. I'll move this over to General Tech.

Rear muffler? Not too difficult, but you might want to plan on getting all new fasteners too. I normally have to break off 1 or 2 bolts because of corrosion.

For genuine Honda parts, there's a couple dealers that do internet mail-order business, but be aware that shipping cost sometimes kills the discount.

there's a couple others that people will probably suggest also.

Thanks Jim, and thanks for moving my post. I didn't see the categories initially, but will use them next time.

How about part suppliers like Baxter's or NAPA?

There are several muffler shops in my area, but of course they want to do the labor. I had a muffler installed locally once on a Ford. It lasted about one year before rusting out, so I'm skeptical about some after market mufflers. But then, my '95 has 170k miles on it and I don't expect it to last forever.

It probably has the original muffler on it.

I've had mixed results with non-genuine exhaust parts. There's a local shop that I like, who generally can find "aftermarket" parts that are made by the same manufacturers. Got some Bosal or Leistritz exhaust parts that had good lifespan. (former VW)

Some no-name mufflers haven't been so good. Not sure what to tell you here, because I haven't bought much of this from the major chain stores. Someone is bound to chime in about it.

I installed a Walker Quiet-Flow muffler and rear exhaust pipe (converter rearward). It was very reasonable priced and fit well. Check prices at Amazon, Rockauto, ebay. I was pleased w/ the OEM sound level, which was one of my key requirements.

Agree w/ JB that new fasteners will be needed if you're in a salted roads area. In Houston, roads are salted even in icy conditions (rare) and fasteners generally can be reused.

New gaskets are also necessary.

good luck

You're in central Oregon, so salt corrosion will be nil. outta last a while is my thought

In last month both my sons got new mufflers at muffler shops for their Hondas
Prelude; Accord

different shops, both $150 - 180; exhaust pipe ahead of muffler had holes in both cases (shown)
many feet to be replaced and bent - new hangers; 3 yr guarantee.

Talking See Below...

Many aftermarket mufflers are made from T-304 Stainless steel like the three pictured below..Those are mostly offered as not to rust out..
