Default Noise when starting

Hello,

I have a 2008 4dr LXP Accord...114,000 miles on it. I have never had an issue other than brakes wearing to fast...but today i heard a undetermined sound when starting the car...ONLY when the car was cold....it almost sounded as if the starting was hanging up when first started....I tried it a few times after that and it started fine with no issues.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Apparently not an uncommon problem. I have a 94 Accord EX and 2003 Acura MDX which do this on first cold start and other times occasionally. What I think is happening is the starter bendix is not retracting (spring action) when the flywheel speed exceeds the starter speed (as it's supposed to do). This results in overspeed of starter and whining or screech (94 Accord).

I have not read of any definitive fix (except replace starter) for this problem and have now driven my 94 Accord for a couple of years w/ this minor annoyance.

good luck

I had this noise on my 2003 MDX w/ 3.2L V6. I removed the starter sunday, and lubed the idler shaft, idler shaft bushing, and idler gear. Noise so far has not occurred, but it may be early to declare victory. A really cold morning is necessary to be sure.

good luck
