3000 is a myth. 5000 is good. 7500 is about where dino oil starts to break down. 7500 should be good for synthetics but I do 3000 on dino and 5000 on synthetics. Look at bobistheoilguy.com
I've seen a bit of stuff on that sight and agree that it is a good site, but I never saw them take into consideration how much stop and go driving you're doing or how much dirt road you drive on... Functional or not at 5000 miles in my 94 accord that oil looked like crap, it was so dark the color black was envious of it....

The whole 3000 mile thing is just something that the oil companies and mechanics say to get more business. in all reality, when you get your oil changed depends on how you drive and the conditions that you live in more so than the mileage. I drive nothing buy highway miles and I can easily go 5000with regular oilbeforeit startsgetting dark.If you just check your oil every now and again and make sure its not getting dark, you'll be alright.
