Default Odometer tampering

Bought a 96 Accord couple days ago. Found that the miles had been tampered with. My question is, is it possible to roll back miles on these vehicles. I am almost positive the speedo itself wasn't exchanged so wondering how somebody would roll miles back? Possible?

Yes it is possible, and not very difficult. Not that I would know how to do it.

It is easy to do; however, it could also be that the previous seller had a malfunctioning speedometer (common on the 5th gen Accords) and swapped the speedo head which had different mileage on the odometer. Probably need to report to your State's department of motor vehicles.

No, speedo was not bad. Previous owner report 198k on the vehicle. 2 days later vehicle shows 128k from this punk we bought it from. We did catch it and got our money back. However, I thought it wasn't possible to roll back miles without damaging the odometer.

The odometer is mechanical on that generation Accord, and there was no real safeguards in place to prevent tampering on the odometer. It can easily be done with basic tools.

This is the kind of response that I'm looking for and respect. Thanks Redbull.

Glad you got your money back from what seems to be a scammer. Did you get it off craigslist or something? You might want to post on there saying there is someone in the area buying Hondas, rolling the miles, and then reselling them.

Craigs, just passed up another tonight based on the Carfax report and shady excuses from the seller.

We plan to report the rolled back miles to the DMV.

What about the newer electronic Odometers? Are those tamper proof?
