This has to be the thermoswitch on the thermostat housing. stop by a junkyard and get a used one and give it a shot on your car.

Going to pick up a 4th thermostat switch tomorrow. I have an appointment for my car to go in next wednesday so I have until then to take a shot at whats wrong.

If it helps any, my car heats up really fast, like it's at the half way mark on the gauge in under a minute, I know this is nor normal.

How did you connect the aftermarket gauge to your car?

I used the connector that goes inline with the hose and just wired it up to test it. It's not currently on the car anymore, all back to stock. The one thing I have not replaced s the coolant sensor on the front of the head, could this be the cause of the problem?

When you mentioned that your gauge immediately goes half way, then I started to wonder about the coolant temperature sending unit. It is on the cylinder head under the distributor. It only has one wire going to it.

Just unplug that sensor and make sure that the wire does not touch any bare metal. Turn the key to the II position and tell us what happens.

Then touch the wire to bare metal (ground). Turn the key to the II position. Tell us what happens. Also turn the key off before the needle on the gauge gets to hot.

Do you have the original temperature switches that went to the thermostat housing? Do you have a volt meter?

I did what you said (with the engine cooled down).

Unplugged and turned to II position = no needle movement

grounded and turned to II position = no needle movement

plugged in and turned to II position = no needle movement

When I bought the car there was an aftermarket thermostat housing on it and it was plugged with an alan bolt plug. No sensor that I bought would fit into the housing so I bought a used thermostat housing that had a used sensor, it didn't work, so I bought a brand new one, and it didn't work, and I did that two more times and it does not work.
