Default Possible dual mass flywheel problem? (2.2 diesel)

I have a 2005 honda accord 2.2 diesel which has done about 165000 miles. Great car but a few weeks ago(before christmas) it made a nasty noise when i changed gear. the noise was only heard when i was not in gear, it went away when i let the clutch out and was in gear. It made the same noise during the jouney. The clutch peddle also stayed down a couple of times and i had to bring it back up with my foot. I feared the worst and made some phone calls and found that a new clutch and flywheel was aroun £1300 fitted - ouch.

I did not use the car for a few days, but when i did the noise has gone away, it has not happened again and the clutch peddle has only stayed down once, some weeks ago. The car is now going fine, i am doing 250 mile trips, driving in traffic etc.

Question, what happened, has the flywheel failed?
If so has it failed in a "safe" way.

Any imformation will be gratefully received.

Honda doesn't give us any diesel engines in USA, but I changed the title to hopefully attract the attention of some of our UK or Europe members.
