Here's the internals of the steering rack. The hydraulic cylinder includes all those rings around the rack #18. I'm not sure firsthand, but sounds like getting a rebuilt rack is likely the better way to go. Dismantling & rebuilding isn't real easy, and if rebuilt ones are reasonable then it's not a bad idea.

It might be that you need more than new rubber seals. Maybe the bore isn't nice & smooth anymore... ?

Thanks alot guys for the info. I did look for a rack and pinion and I found one at Autozone for $108.00 including my core,$109.00 at O'Reilly. I will check Rock Auto after work because I heard they are pretty cheap. I will definetly fix it but I'll probably wait a couple of months to do it. Money is kind of tight right now. My mechanic said that when he brought the car in his garage that I had 3 dime size drops on his floor. Does that sound like a bad leak to you?

Not really, I'd kind of judge it a little more by watching the fluid level and see how often you need to refill/top it off.

I finally got my car back(needed a ball joint) and sucked all the non Honda power steering out of it. I pulled into my driveway and instantly noticed a puddle on my concrete driveway. I put Lucas in and drove it around the neighbothood for a while. About ten minutes later I came home and parked over some fresh cardboard. I waited about 2 hours and looked underneath and there was no wet spot at all. Does it really work that fast? If that's the case that is great!

Off topic a little, does anyone know what the radio wires for a 1989 accord are? What I mean is what color are the wires for let's say the speakers or the constant and switched wire. When I bought the car the radio was pulled out of it so I have no idea how to hook my aftermarket radio up. Thank-you again for all your help!

Doubt it worked that quick, try parking with the wheels turned different directions...Straight, not leak..turned left, guessing you'll see leakage....right, ???

Look in the DIY for a manual to download. It will have wire diagrams and other helpful info.

If it did work that good, you know you won't have to do the real fix for a while. Even if it had slowed down the leak you will be in better shape than before,,,,

Default 1999 Honda Accord 4 cyl 2.3L - leak at seal on rack to Steering column

I can feel a puddle of fluid in the cavity on top of the power steering rack where the steering column connects. There is fluid all over the area below and behind where blow by occurs during driving.
The leak appears to be more significant when the car is left parked with the wheels turned to the left. For example - drove 250 miles then 5 days of city driving with no noticeable loss of fluid. Parked with the wheels at an angle a few times and saw a 1.5 inch drop in fluid level in the reservoir.
Is there a way to repair the leak without removing the rack?
If not, can someone provide a reference to a good guide for rack replacement process with diagrams for this year and make?
I've had the car since 2002 and love it!!

Here's the R&R procedure from the shop manual.

Default Is repair to seal possible?

JimBlake - thank you for the diagrams, very helpful reference! Should I assume that since you didn't respond to the question about repair of seal that such a repair isn't reasonable and I should plan on a replacement of the Rack?

The shop manual also has a procedure for overhauling the rack, but I don't think it's reasonable to do that without removing it from the car.
It's a lot of pages to post here, so it might be a good thing for you to get a copy if you're going to do that kind of work.
